Modern versus period pianos – Klaviano Blog

Pianos are an integral part of classical and modern music. Choosing between a vintage piano and a modern piano can make a significant difference to the experience of both musician and listener. Have you ever wondered what the main differences are between these instruments and which one better suits your musical preferences? In this article, we will take a look at the unique characteristics of both types of piano. We’ll discover what the Chopin Competition on Period Instruments has to offer, and share the results of our survey on Instagram. We invite you to read on.

What is a modern piano and what is a period piano?

Historical and modern pianos differ not only in age, but also in the construction, materials and technology used to build them. The distinction between them is not based on one specific cut-off date, but on the evolution of their construction and sound over the centuries.

Modern instruments are produced on a larger scale, using modern technology, which guarantees their durability and uniformity of sound. Historic pianos, on the other hand, have a unique sound resulting from the use of older construction techniques and materials that give them a warmer and more organic tone.

Differences in sound and play

Historic pianos have a softer and richer sound, which is often appreciated by musicians and listeners seeking an authentic musical experience. Modern pianos, however, offer greater precision and strength of sound, making them more versatile in a variety of musical genres.

Chopin Competition on Period Instruments

This competition for pianists takes place every five years and is dedicated to performers playing pianos from Chopin’s time or their faithful replicas. Two editions have been held so far (in 2018 and 2023). The previous winners of these competitions are: as Tomasz Ritter (2018) and Eric Guo (2023). The specificity of the competition lies in the authenticity of sound and performance technique. Which allows for a better understanding of how Chopin’s music might have sounded in his time.

The results of a social media poll conducted after the recent Chopin Competition on Period Instruments showed that listeners were divided in their preference for historical and modern pianos.

Results of our poll on Instagram

We recently conducted a poll on our Instagram klaviano.pianos, asking our observers which pianos they preferred: modern or period. The results were as follows: 65% of respondents preferred modern pianos and 35% chose historical pianos.

Modern or period piano? Which would you choose?

Summary

Modern and period pianos have their own unique qualities and advantages that may attract different musicians and listeners. We welcome a diversity of opinions and encourage our readers to share their preferences – which type of piano do you prefer? Is it the modern sound and precision or the warmth and authenticity of vintage instruments?
